Australian Lowlines

Our journey into Lowlines was - I expect - quite different to many breeders. Known for their docility, mothering ability and most notably their "short stature" Lowlines are perfect small block cattle, great for children getting started in the showring and anecdotal, a really solid allrounder for everyone except commercial beef producers (yes, we are still hearing this in 2025). Our journey began after seeing Lowlines popping up online, Scott immediately put a stop to my "crazy ideas" to buy hobby farm cows..... until, further research revealed their awesome breed characteristics, low calf weights, high stocking rates, bos taurus genetics advantages, but the most impressive info, to someone who has seen/assisted delivering difficult calvings in heifers, was anecdotal evidence of no calving problems when a Lowline bull was used over any other breed of cow, shorter gestation, lower birth weight, and the kicker.... polled calves. After almost 18 months of research, talking with breeders, broaching the subject and being laughed at by seasoned commercial cattlemen, Scott finally relented and we purchased 2 bulls, 2 cows and 3 heifers. Only 12 short months later, we met John and Margaret from Kougari Lowline stud and added some phenomenal genetics to our herd. Nalcoombie breed our lowlines, with consideration for not only genetic capacity, but also with an ever present focus on beef production. So did the Lowline bulls ever make it into our commercial beef breeding herd? that is a hard YES from us, all of our shorthorn and composite commercial maiden heifers (aged 12 - 15 months) are joined to fullblood Lowline bulls and resulting calves are a brilliant commercially viable F1 terminal cross. Have we needed to assist a heifer in our herd during calving since 2013? ONE, a single heifer in over 1000 calves, due to breech/malpresentation, not stuck. As a bonus, almost every calf is black, polled and super cute! Our stud Lowlines, carry some of the best preforming genetics, with old school Triangie type, depth of body, compact and correct confirmation. You will notice when the team are showing, that our Lowlines have not been extensively clipped, they are presented in a neat natural style, which allows breeders, and the public to see how great they actually are. Farmers, if your partner is asking for Lowlines and you think they don't have a place in your beef herd, you will be pleasantly surprised. Partners, if the Farmer has said no, as you walk through the stud cattle stalls again this year, and you can see how Lowlines will work for your business, don't give up... come find one of us for a chat..... Afterall, Nalcoombie Lowlines- when every INCH counts!
