Our Heritage

A multigenerational property with beginnings in 1898, Shorthorns have featured heavily in Nalcoombie's history. Scott and his children are 5th and 6th generational farmers respectively and have been breeding commercial cattle all their lives.
Intertwined in Nalcoombies' almost 130 years of history is the shorthorn breed. Accolades and trophies, photographs and newspaper clippings include a dairy of bush cows (AIS and Shorthorns) run by the family in the early 1900s, taking butter accolades at the local Springsure Show as "Foot Bros & Biddulph", into the 1950's and 1960's of Peter and Jim Gale (Gale Bros) showing shorthorn bullocks and winning broad ribbons as far away as Rockhampton, and then Peter & his wife Elaine, breeding and growing shorthorn bulls into the mid-1970s.
What was assumed to be a lost bloodline by many, was lurking quietly in the background, in carefully selected breeders and homebred bulls, as late as the 2000s, typey mickeys with shorthorn traits and composition were being selected and retained.
As kids grew and became more involved in the commercial beef breeding, Nalcoombie's transition to certified organic, and their involvement in school and group stud and commercial cattle showing, talk of reviving Peter's beloved shorthorn stud, became laden with planning and hopes and dreams. The realisation of just how vigorious those beloved shorty genetic were became evident, the (then recently) aquired fullblood shorthorn bull from a local breeder was put in with the commercial cows, and the first years calf drop included a full white bull calf, from a very roan, shorthorn type cow, followed by multiples of roans, red roans, and red with a little whites.
That spark and passion continue to grow each day, as the dream and the herd reach new milestones, it is humbling to know that the DNA of those breeders who went into the dairy to keep Nalcoombie operating over 125 years ago, are the baseline genetics of our herd today.

Our Team.
Our operation is diverse, so is our team.
